A new series of dumpster-houses was being constructed in 2012 in three different Utrecht neighborhoods (Leidsche Rijn, Wittevrouwen and Kanaleneiland). The results were eventually moved to the city centre, where they became a pavilion with bar. On the inside and outside of the buildings, video footage of the process in the neighborhoods was being projected (videomapping) accompanied by music and soundscapes produced with field recordings.
Case
Dumpster as a pop-up meeting place
Building neighborhood meeting places from waste material.
Foundation is about collecting waste material and old furniture from the neighborhood, moving it to a waste container, reusing it to turn it into a small house (with the dumpster as the foundation), to become a temporary meeting place for neighbours and passers-by.
This site-specific and investigative approach to design and public space leaves room for unexpected local input and cooperation, thereby improving social cohesion, increasing connectedness and a sense of localism.
