Designing for local food

Part of: Makers Projects

Our food – the production, trade and consumption – is subject to major changes in social and economical areas. Those transformations determine to a great extent how we look at our 'daily bread' and our landscape.

Nowadays, policy on the area of food production and consumption takes shape predominantly based on economic incentives, while many of the current questions regarding food are actually cultural in nature. We see a shift from ‘How can we feed the world?’ to questions like:

  • How do we design for local food?
  • How can we (re)own 'our food'?

Several designers, artists, and architects search after answers to such questions. An exploration into their views, insights and practices by The Beach has resulted in the book Kost (2010). Further examples are collected here.
