Indian social designer Panghaal will visit Pakhuis de Zwijger for an open and informal conversation about design and local social change, building community, and the opportunities for sustainist design. Join the open discussion with Michiel Schwarz (Sustainism Lab), Francesca Miazzo (CITIES), Hans Karssenberg (Stipo/Inspiring Cities), Diana Krabbendam (The Beach) and others.

Jogi was invited to work with master students from Academy of Architecture and Reinwardt Academy (museology) by Michiel Schwarz, artist in residence of both academies. In the AIR-programme Schwarz brings in a ‘sustainist’ perspective, which involves both ecological and social dimensions of sustainability. In a 3-day Sustainist Design Workshop Jogi Panghaal, together with Diana Krabbendam (of the The Beach network) they are focusing on a sustainist ‘social design’ approach to 'place-making.' They do this within a specific social locality, the Wildeman-neighbourhood in Amsterdam Nieuw-West, where The Beach is located and works with local people for years.

Jogi Panghaal is an Indian designer, researcher, teacher and thinker, with a special focus on how designers play a key role in social innovation and sustainable livelihoods. Currently he is professor at the School of Design, Ambedkar University, developing India’s first ever ‘Social Design’ masters programme. Originally trained in industrial design, Jogi graduated from the National Institute of Design (Ahmedabad, Gujarat) He has over 30 years of research, learning and co-creation experience and has taught at many design schools in India, and has also been connected with Les Ateliers in Paris, RMIT in Melbourne, Rietveld Academy and Design Academy Eindhoven. He is in Holland for a 'sustainist design’ workshop at the Amsterdam Academy of Architecture and Reinwardt Academy.
